Design–Build for Mountain Homes, Additions, and Second-Home Living in Western North Carolina
|
At Scarlet Builds, we specialize in creating thoughtful mountain homes, seamless additions, and custom renovations designed for the lifestyle of Western North Carolina. Whether you’re transitioning into semi-retirement, relocating from out of state, or planning a second home in the mountains, we bring clarity, comfort, and craftsmanship to every step of your project.
Our design–build approach means you work with one dedicated professional team from concept through construction. We manage the architecture, permitting, zoning, engineering coordination, scheduling, and the entire build process—so you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than managing contractors. With deep experience in the terrain and building conditions unique to WNC—from steep slopes and drainage challenges to county approvals and mountain weather—we design homes that are both beautiful and resilient. Every project is tailored to how you want to live: gardening, hosting family, enjoying long afternoons on a covered porch, working part-time from home, or simply embracing the quiet. If you’re looking for a trusted partner to guide your mountain home project with care, precision, and personal attention, we would be honored to work with you. |
Let’s create a home that supports your next chapter. |
HELPING YOU - BRING YOUR VISION TO LIFE. |
Susan Scarlet-Macaw is an accomplished architect and entrepreneur with a diverse background and a passion for creativity, craftsmanship, and problem-solving. A graduate of Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Architecture, Susan also earned a Master of Construction Management from Western Carolina University. Her academic journey included studying in Florence, Italy, and extensive travel across the United States, Spain and France, which have deeply influenced her architectural perspective.
Susan’s love for architecture began in childhood, inspired by her grandparents’ woodshop and her mother’s artistry with sewing. These early experiences instilled in her a meticulous attention to detail, curiosity, and a strong work ethic. She learned the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship from her grandfather, fostering her ability to balance creativity with practicality. Her professional journey began in San Francisco as a residential designer. Later, Susan explored entrepreneurial ventures in fitness and bicycle manufacturing for 12 years before returning to architecture. Over the years, she has worked on an array of projects, from government facilities like K-12 schools and courthouses in Nevada to churches, condominium renovations, and multifamily buildings in Virginia. Her work also includes expertise in construction documentation and budget management for complex projects, such as the Institute of Defense Analyses office building. Now based in Sylva, North Carolina, Susan leads her own architectural practice, collaborating with a network of dedicated professionals in Western Carolina. She is committed to delivering innovative designs, fostering strong client relationships, and ensuring project success through clear communication and attention to detail. |
